Specialist Eye Surgeons
Referral support

Specialist referrals made clearer

We support GPs and optometrists who refer patients for specialist ophthalmic care in Moonee Ponds. Our role is to assess the patient, explain the diagnosis, recommend an individual treatment plan and communicate key findings back to the referring clinician.

Patients are commonly referred to us for cataract surgery assessment, glaucoma care and monitoring, retinal disease, diabetic eye disease and broader ophthalmology review. We also provide selected onsite treatments, including glaucoma laser, retinal laser, lash laser epilation and intraocular injections where clinically appropriate.

A current referral is important for Medicare rebate access. If your patient is unsure what to bring or how long to allow, they can review our contact information or call (03) 9372 7022 before attending.

Helpful referral details

Information that supports timely assessment

Clear referral information helps us understand the patient’s presenting concern, urgency and existing eye health context. Helpful details may include the reason for referral, relevant symptoms, visual acuity, intraocular pressure readings, ocular history, current medications and any recent imaging or test results.

For patients with retinal or macular concerns, background details can help guide assessment with our macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and retinal surgery services. Sudden or severe symptoms should always be assessed promptly through an appropriate medical pathway.

We understand that patients may feel anxious about surgery, laser treatment or eye injections. We take time to explain what the appointment may involve, including dilation, testing and treatment options where relevant.

Referrer FAQs

Common referral questions

If your question is not answered here, please contact our team. We can help clarify referral requirements, appointment preparation and patient information.

Ask Our Team

We accept referrals from GPs and optometrists. A current referral is required and is important for patients who wish to claim the maximum Medicare rebate where eligible.

Most referrals are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. If a patient has an older referral, it may need to be updated before their appointment.

Patients should bring their current Medicare card, pension card if applicable, Health Care card if applicable, private insurance card if applicable and a list of current medications. They should allow up to 2 hours, as dilation, testing or procedures may be required.
