Retinal Surgery
Specialist assessment and vitreo-retinal surgery for retinal conditions, with personalised care for patients across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Retinal surgery tailored to your diagnosis
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It plays a central role in clear vision, reading, recognising faces and detecting detail. When a retinal condition affects sight or threatens vision, a specialist retinal assessment can help clarify the diagnosis and guide the next step.
We provide referral-based retinal care in Moonee Ponds for patients from metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our retinal surgical care is supported by Dr Mei Hong Tan, a retinal specialist and vitreo-retinal surgeon with expertise in medical retina and surgical retina.
Retinal treatment may involve monitoring, in-clinic treatment or surgery, depending on the condition. We also provide care for related retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, where laser treatment or intraocular injections may be clinically appropriate.
When retinal surgery may be considered
Retinal surgery may be considered for selected conditions such as retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetic retinal complications, subretinal haemorrhage displacement, and lens or intraocular lens retrieval and exchange. Suitability depends on your diagnosis, eye health, test results and overall medical circumstances.
Not every retinal problem needs surgery. Some retinal conditions are managed with observation, laser treatment or in-clinic injections. If your symptoms relate to central vision changes, distortion or leakage in the retina, our information on macular degeneration treatment and refractive and injection services may also be helpful.
During your consultation, we explain what has been found, what treatment options may be appropriate and what risks or limitations apply. For a full view of related care, you can also explore our ophthalmology services.

Arrange specialist retinal assessment with a referral
Ask your GP or optometrist for a current referral, then contact us on (03) 9372 7022 to discuss your appointment.
What to expect at your retinal appointment
Your retinal appointment is designed to gather the information needed for a safe and informed treatment plan. You should allow up to two hours, as testing, pupil dilation or additional assessment may be required.
Please bring your current Medicare card, pension or Health Care card if applicable, private insurance card if applicable, a list of current medications and your referral. A current referral from your GP or optometrist is important for claiming the maximum Medicare rebate.
Dilating drops are commonly used during eye appointments and can affect vision for a period afterwards. We recommend that you do not drive yourself. If you are comparing retinal care with other eye services, our pages on cataract surgery, glaucoma care and retinal surgery explain how different eye conditions are assessed and managed.
