Macular Degeneration
We assess, monitor and treat macular degeneration with clear advice, retinal expertise and personalised care designed to help protect central vision wherever possible.
Care for changes in central vision
Macular degeneration affects the macula, the central part of the retina that helps you read, recognise faces and see fine detail. It is most often age-related, although some forms can occur earlier due to genetic factors.
We provide specialist assessment for dry and wet macular degeneration, including monitoring of retinal changes and treatment where clinically appropriate. Our retinal care is supported by Dr Mei Hong Tan, a retinal specialist and vitreo-retinal surgeon with medical and surgical retina experience.
Your care plan depends on your diagnosis, eye health and symptoms. If treatment is needed, this may include in-clinic injections or laser treatment, and we may also consider related retinal concerns through our retinal surgery and diabetic eye disease services where relevant.
Understanding the type of macular disease
Dry macular degeneration usually changes vision gradually. It can involve retinal deposits and, in some cases, loss of retinal cells over time. Wet macular degeneration can cause sudden central vision change or distortion due to leakage from abnormal blood vessels beneath or within the retina.
Both forms can affect central vision, and some vision loss may be irreversible. Earlier assessment can improve the chance of timely management, especially if you notice new distortion, a dark patch in central vision or a sudden change in reading clarity.
Where suitable, we offer treatment options such as in-clinic injections and retinal laser treatment. You can also learn more about related care through refractive and injections, retinal surgery and our broader services.
Retinal expertise with patient-centred care
We take time to explain your diagnosis, treatment options and monitoring needs in clear language. Our team works with your GP or optometrist so your care stays coordinated.
